2, 68 KG BACKGROUND FROM GIBSON MEMPHIS: The Gibson Memphis ES-330 59 VOS Reissue was built from 2009 to 2019, when the Memphis plant closed. This remarkable instrument re-creates the original 1959 version of the ES-330. When introduced in 1959, the ES-330 offered appearance of the recently launched ES-335 models, and similar materials. The body is Maple laminate and the neck is Mahogany with a Rosewood fingerboard. However, there are significant structural differences. First, the 330 has fully hollow construction with no solid center block. Second, the neck joined the body at the 16th fret, with the cutaways not offering very much access past that. In 1968, the neck joint changed to the 19th fret, allowing more access and making the guitar longer. While still a full 24.75 inch scale, the 16 fret neck joint (like the 12-fret neck on steel string guitars) offers advantages to players who don’t spend a lot of time in the higher registers. The guitar is physically shorter, and the fretting arm does not have to reach as far. And, it’s easier to use this format in a smaller space (including a couch). The shorter neck also reduces weight somewhat and the guitar is under six pounds . The P-90 pickups deliver a full, rich and fat tone with great response. While ‘underwound’ they are fairly loud. Gibson is all about history, and it doesn’t get much more historic than the company’s first thinline archtop electric: the ’59 ES-330. The Gibson Memphis Historic Series '59 ES-330 VOS is a product of the company’s unwavering respect for its past. Built to Vintage Original Spec (VOS), this ES-330 transports the player back to a time when the box was the talk of the town, sporting killer features like a 3-ply maple/poplar/maple body with centerblocked semi-hollowbody design, quarter-sawn mahogany neck with and a rolled rosewood fingerboard, adjustable ABR-1 bridge, trapeze tailpiece, and dual Memphis Historic Spec P-90 single coil pickups with Memphis Tone Control Plus circuitry for warm, vibrant tone with ample sustain and resonance whether you plug it in or not.
